I was very impressed by Jess’s professionalism and authenticity when she recently visited our Year 2 students.  Jess captivated the group by sharing the ‘real-life events’ which prompted her to write some of her stories.  She provided a safe space for our students to share their own experiences and gently encouraged many to start writing about their own precious memories. I would have no hesitation is recommending Jess to other schools as she has left such a positive impression here at Marymount Primary.

We were fortunate to have Jess Black visit us last Thursday. She brought with her excellent communication skills and love for what she does.
Jess has had a background in publishing and editing as well as a love for reading. During her visit Jess spoke openly about the positives of reading and using imagination every day. She engaged with the students in developing characters for future stories.
The students were keen to find out about Bindi Irwin and Australia Zoo as well as the development of the stories in the Bindi Series that Jess wrote. Jess told tales of her life and adventures in South Africa, Mexico and Australia. The children were spellbound. Jess came with beaded animal toys made in South Africa as a stimulus for character development and asked various students to carry on the building of each new animal character.

I would like to thank Jess Black for her great rapport and desire to meet the brief for her visit to our College.

Thank you for visiting us at Genesis to help celebrate Book Week 2019. The teachers and students in Prep to Year 3 enjoyed your workshops and hearing about your books, the inspiration for your stories as well as the writing process.   It was great that you differentiated your workshops according to the age of the students. Your visit has generated a lot of interest in your books, particularly the Mr Walker series, which we are selling at our Book Fair.

We were so fortunate to have Jess Black visit our primary school during Book Week.  She presented two one hour sessions to both infants and primary students.  Both sessions were fantastic with Jess easily modifying her presentations engrossing both audiences.  Jess interacted and engaged the children with stories of her funny rescue dog, her daughters' experiences with baking and wanting a unicorn for a pet, her father's love of cricket and the real  Mr Walker.  Jess told the students that these real life experiences, events and moments are what make up her characters and their stories.  She made the idea of writing fun.  Jess' books have flown off our shelves! I highly recommend a visit from Jess Black.

Jess spoke to our Prep to Year 3 classes. The students and teachers alike were mesmerised by her presentation. Jess’ explanation of the writing process clearly connected with the curriculum and teachers were able to do follow-up work in the classroom. The students loved her stories and all of Jess’ books flew off the library shelves following her visit. We would definitely love to have Jess visit our school again in the future.

Cooranbong Public School

We absolutely loved having you visit yesterday. Our teachers are very thankful to you because as a result of your talk, students are so inspired to write! One Year 1 student even went home and wrote books about her pets yesterday afternoon. Our library is completely void of your books at the moment, as they have all been loaned out, which is true indication of how much your stories touched students at CPS.

On behalf of the staff and students at Cooranbong Public School I would like to say thank you. You have inspired our young people to read and write funny and interesting stories.

An engaging session that allowed the children to be inspired and to think about the things in their lives that influence their writing. Jess spoke about her family and dog and allowed us into her creative world. I highly recommend organising Jess for a session for all ages. Her openness and published books cater for a range of ages.

Fun, engaging and informative. Jess Black visited our preschool children to discuss the importance of caring for animals. During the visit the children asked many questions about Jess’ love for animals and about how she comes up with ideas for stories. Jess then invited the children to join in with her, and with the use of puppets, engaged the children in the reading of an animal story. There was lots of laughter and smiles and a great time was had by all. We can’t wait to have her visit again!

St Joseph's Primary School

We had the opportunity to listen to Jess Black speak during the Newcastle Writer’s Festival. The students found her presentation entertaining and very interesting. Listening to stories from Jess’ youth and her love for animals and the pleasure she received from their many adventures were both enjoyable and engaging. Like the books Jess has written, she really had the ability to relate to the children and take their imaginations on a memorable journey.
During the presentation Jess was able to inspire the students to become better writers by suggesting practical strategies and ideas for them to get started with their own writing. The benefits of this were definitely evident in the work samples the children produced afterwards.
I would most definitely recommend selecting Jess Black for an author visit to your school. Thanks Jess for a fabulous presentation!

We would highly recommend choosing Jess Black as your guest Author. Jess has a warm conversational style that really puts the children at ease. They enjoyed hearing tales of her childhood; listened intently as she read from one her books; and during jointly constructed story time, the students were all engaged, critically thinking and wanting to contribute to the discussion.
